V2D Devlog #1 — Rana's Streams Now Run on Our Own System

You may have noticed — Rana has looked a little different on stream lately.

Since this summer, Rana has been streaming on a 2D animation system we built ourselves, called V2D.

Why Build Our Own?

Rana’s original artwork has more than six hundred layers. The usual approach often means merging and simplifying layers before they can be animated.

We wanted the opposite: keep every layer the artist drew. Hair, wings, clothes, the light in her eyes — all of it moves just as it was painted.

What V2D Does Today

  • Expression effects: heart eyes, sparkles, tears, dozing off, humming, a lightbulb moment, celebration confetti… The effects sit on top of the character and never overwrite her own expression.
  • Physics: twin tails, hair, wings and skirt all sway — and even catch the wind.
  • Phone face tracking: your phone’s camera reads your expressions, and the video never leaves the phone.
  • Studio: backgrounds, lighting and props for streams, switched with one click.
  • Chat, subtitles and karaoke: those on-screen elements are part of V2D, too.

What We’re Working On

  • Mouth shapes: more natural talking, smiling and crying.
  • More three-dimensional head turns: anime faces are hard to turn, and we’re searching for a way that looks good without breaking.
  • English and Japanese interfaces.
  • Our second character, Kujira, is moving into V2D as well.

This is the first V2D devlog. We’ll share more here as things progress.
